Very Inspiring to read that someone cares to express that the system is wrong. We only have to look at the youth of today and their desperate search for Role models, I am witnessing the self destructive emulation in this the so call adult world of 2012. Desperation for money, desperation to not be poor, desperation to not be old and ugly. The obsession with the physical and material. Retro spin inaccessable view of a long and mis-remembered world, glistening with halcyon illusions. Yet as always is it true that in order to be recognised one must have the time; that which money can afford; a very good education; one that only money can afford; and again inconvincingly; speak easy from the profession of consultancy from the wealthy Institutions that seemingly support good causes. and fund our superior friends.... I become even more confused with this double edged sword of sincerity when from the mouths of rich american writers. who can afford to trek with superior spiritual masters of enlightenment......then how can one buy the books and pay to listen to advice from the natural resources of one individual voice.....When one has no money??????????? Personally, I believe that the basic foundation or essence of leadership is character. Character and/or leadership is more than talk. Anyone can say he/she has integrity, but action is the real indicator of character. It is what you sow, what you think, and what you do. Your character determines who you are, who you are then determines what you see. What you see determines what you do. That's why you can never separate a person's character from his/her actions. Dear Bill,First, I'm very pleased with your "deep and thoughtful review," as Lion expressed it so well above. I was delighted when I found out you would be reviewing the book, because that's exactly what I knew would come back. I believe you're absolutely correct when you say this is the beginning of this work and that there will be better books written about the subject. I hope to write one of them as my knowledge and depth of understanding around the evolution of the masculine and feminine archetypes increases. I began this work with that goal in mind, as there was very little out there that was touching on the evolutionary aspects of men's work. It is, I believe, as I describe on the back cover, a bridge to what is only now beginning to emerge, and that emergence demands and creates increased complexity, to which I hope to have added to in some small way. With that in mind, I hope you'll indulge me explaining to your integral audience some things that I don't talk about to my target readership.One of the problems with writing a book about a process---in this case the workshop that inspired it---is that you can't give everything away, and so I, too, believe the book naturally comes up short in some ways. For instance, with the processes I include, I don't tell men exactly how to do them, but rather point at them, hoping they will come to the workshops for them. I'm also setting up an online classroom so I can serve and reach more menVery few men come to this process without some sort of increasing spiritual awareness. The spirituality aspects expressed by the marketing, the book, and the process itself, invite men in with a growing perspective of the divine and our connectedness with everything. It's not that the divine did not exist before, but that up until then, a lot of men aren't aware of the depth of their own divinity and connectedness, so the expression, "the Divine Masculine," is also used as an archetype to increase awareness of that already emerging perspective. Yes, the book does not go to the latest stage consciousness, because that's not the target audience the book is aimed at. The men I'm aiming at are generally (in SDi terms) Green emergent to Yellow. In Deida's model, my goal is to begin moving men from second stage to third stage. During the process, the concept of unity consciousness and non-duality is introduced and experienced through guided state experiences.Whenever I work with men around archetypes, the ones that usually show up are the ones they carry at their particular stage of development (in most cases, again, Green or second stage slightly emergent to third stage) so these archetypes automatically show as stage, or developmentally, relevant. We accomplish that by doing the altered-states work that allows the men to place the shadow aspects of these archetypes in an integral perspective with an emphasis on cultural perspective. So even if that shadow was---and they usually are---created at an earlier stage, we can use the present stage to bring it to the light. The facilitator must skillfully help the man stay grounded through this process to avoid bypassing.Just as Wilber's four-quadrant model evolved into the multidimensionality of interior and exterior aspects of each quadrant, Jung's model of the anima and animus must also evolve and change as we change toward increasing complexity. It is in that spirit that Ie 've tried to move toward what it means for individuals to carry those aspects as well. I hope I get better at it, and in my defense, I've always admitted that this is my exploration into my own understanding. This, too shall evolve!Where I will disagree, is in your “brush-off” of Shamanic Astrology. You write, “It’s challenging to say anything useful about the inclusion of astrology, a pre-rational personality assessment tool, so it’s best to leave it alone.” It's too bad you've lumped Shamanic Astrology with traditional and pre-rational astrology. We, as integralites, sometimes tend to dismiss that which we don't understand as pre-rational, but as one who practices shamanism, I will contend that there is magic in the universe...and what is magic, anyway, except that which we don't have a rational explanation for? Since we've pretty much agreed that archetypes play important developmental roles for men and women, and that I'm sure we can also agree that “masculine and feminine” are also archetypal qualities, and that, last, most typologies in Wilber's model are also archetypal, I'm somewhat puzzled by integral's reluctance to look at astrology from an archetypal perspective and as a tool for increased self-awarenesss. This holds particularly true for Shamanic Astrology, since it---unlike other forms of astrology that are fixed in time---is the only astrological format I've seen that evolves as we evolve.From a recent writing on my blog, I further develop this claim:“As I consider the Integral Warrior Men's Process an evolutionary approach to men's "work," that goes to new places other men's work has not gone, it only makes sense that it evolves and goes deeper as I evolve my understanding around how all these processes and modalities fit together. One of the new modalities I've added---to the book first, and to the workshop, next---is Shamanic Astrology. One of the few shortcomings of Integral Theory is that some of its well-known proponents don't recognize the value of anything archetypal. However, I'm claiming that if I can put archetypes in a developmental context, the door opens to placing them in an integral context. That is not to say Shamanic Astrology is integral, but that it can placed inside a larger integral perspective and that it adds value to that larger perspective.”Shamanic Astrology is a recent development that is unlike any ofter form of astrology. So in that sense, how is Shamanic Astrology any more “pre-rational” than say “The Enneagram?” I then describe how I've personally used Shamanic Astrology and write:“With Shamanic Astrology, we explore the archetypes of each man’s lineage, refining and integrating the dance of his inner feminine and masculine and his best enlightenment and relationship paths. Each man also creates an experiential medicine wheel to acknowledge all of his personal archetypes, deepening his understanding of who he is. Last, each man co-creates a Sacred Marriage ceremony. This is not about telling the future; this is about gaining a deeper understanding of who we are.”I've not yet found a better way to get men to understand their inner feminine and to then honor it while re-integrating previously disowned aspects of their masculinity as post-modernism demands.I felt these responses are important for an even deeper understanding of exactly what it is I'm trying to accomplish with the book and the men I hope to reach with it. As a part time yoga teacher , and full time Integrative Leadership facilitator and Coach , I have been so fascinated with how the yoga path ( an integral practice) guides and informs the leadership path . This is a deep and thoughtful review, and I appreciate your scholarly approach (as usual). This statement stood out as a mistake - perhaps unintentionally: "The mythopoetic men’s movement—and its Christian aspect, The Promise Keepers—sought to use Jungian psychology, mythology, folktales, and other avenues to re-contextualize masculinity."My understanding is that the Promise Keepers would disclaim and disavow any association with Jung, mythology, or folktales to re-contextualize masculinity, unless you include the Bible as mythology and folktales. If you do, than the sentence makes sense. The Promise Keepers instruct men to be the decision-makers, providers, and protectors of their family in very traditional (40's and 50s) roles. The little woman should stay home and take care of the house and children. The men should "Man Up" and become the strong providers of discipline, strength, and moral righteousness, just like the fundamentalist Christian interpretation of Scripture says they should. I believe they fall short of demanding the stoning of adulterers, though.And although you quote Jung accurately, and admonish Stamper for misinterpreting his anima/animus schema, everyone I know in the men's movement (which is most of the major leaders) has moved past a strict interpretation of Jung into a wider understanding that we contain and embody both masculine and feminine forces - whether they're called sacred, divine, or archetypal. As this resonates true here for me, what has maybe just been seen is that in my relationships I am building my own survival mechanism in the continuous discrimination of a strong woman.
