Nick Shannon is the founder and principal of Management Psychology Limited, a UK-based practice specialising in organisational and senior management development.

Nick is a chartered occupational psychologist, a member of the British Psychological Society and a founding member of the Association of Business Psychologists. Whilst Nick has trained as a psychologist, gaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Philosophy at Oxford and his Master’s in Organisational Psychology at Birkbeck/London University, he has broad based business experience. He started his career in 1979 as a precious metals and soft commodities physical and futures dealer, and subsequently went on to be a trader in financial futures and other derivatives on the London, New York and Chicago markets. Later he took an MBA with the Open University and became a director of a privately owned London based Foreign Exchange company. He also founded and ran a bar-restaurant close to the City of London. Convinced that the most fascinating and challenging issues in business were those arising from the dynamics between people and the management (or mismanagement) of employees, he subsequently moved into organisational consultancy.

Nick believes passionately in the value of a combination of philosophical inquiry and rigorous scientific methodology. He has a particular interest in adult developmental psychology and the cognitive and emotional transitions that managers must make in order to work effectively at successively higher levels of complexity and hierarchy. His work with client organisations is focussed on helping them develop great management teams in order to improve performance and to provide a better environment for all employees, and can be divided into three different areas:

  1. Senior management assessment, selection and leadership development, including individual coaching and mentoring for executives making transitions.
  2. Senior management team development, including group coaching, and the design and facilitation of workshop programs in the areas of problem resolution, mentoring, values, influencing skills, and negotiation.
  3. Organisational development, working to help organisations build their capability for the future through a variety of projects including development of talent management strategies, role-profiling, succession planning and performance management systems.

While Nick consults extensively in the UK, he has also consulted in Europe and the USA.
