Understanding and Assessing “Soft” Leader Skills

This conference will explore different models, conceptualizations, and measures of the “soft skills” that are so necessary for effective leadership. By “soft skills” we are referring to the interpersonal skills, communication skills, persuasion skills, political savvy, and emotional abilities used by leaders to inspire, motivate, and move followers toward the accomplishment of goals. The intent of the conference is to bring together the top scholars working in this area, for discussion and presentation of theory and research (Day 1), and to make formal presentations and poster presentations to a larger audience of leadership scholars, students, and practitioners (Day 2). We hope to increase understanding of the “soft skills” of the leader, and ideally, we would like to change that term into something more solid (no one seems happy calling this constellation of critical leader skills “soft”). An aspirational goal would be to change that metaphor.

An edited book will be produced from the conference presentations, as is the case with most Kravis-de Roulet conferences.

Integral Without Borders

Integral Without Borders has two incredible events lined up for the first half of 2012. Both events take a turn towards practice in the field – in Peru and South Africa – and both directly engage with the realities of social holons. The systems and cultural dimensions of global issues are incredibly important for us to have any serious or lasting impact. As Ken Wilber put so eloquently in this writings, “the staggering weight of the Lower Right” is a force to be reckoned with and Marx went as far as saying that the modes of production actually set the predominant consciousness of a society. And, then the Lower Left presents us with other challenges about how cultures change, how worldviews evolve, and how the predominant social discourse influences individuals. Added to that is our own cultural conditioning and shared beliefs that for the most part remain pre-conscious, making our conscious engagement with our own cultural referents very challenging – this is a critical consideration for any cross-cultural practitioner. So, in these two events, we’ve turned our eye to the social dimensions of our ways of being, both of which are essential for any resilient social change to occur globally. The other unique aspect to both events is the direct experience in the field.

The South Africa event will take place in Thlolego Ecovillage in the North Western Province of South Africa and the Peru event will take place in Cusco and surrounding communities, including the Amazon rainforest. Throughout these events, as in previous meetings and events, we’ll include theory discussions, spiritual practice, shadow work, group creative dialogue, and lots of moments to break bread together.

Engaging Cultures, Societies, and Systems

When: January 6-16th, 2012

Description: Integral Without Borders is holding a learning event in Cusco, Peru to further examine the dynamics of cultures, societies and systems, as well as to learn skills to engage a truly integrally-informed social change. Participants will travel to Lima, then fly to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon Basin to meet with brazil nut producers and their communities, then fly to Cusco, the hub of the regions rich cultural heritage and an international tourism destination in which we’ll contemplate the dynamics of cultural change. The trip culminates in the Sacred Valley of the Inkas and in Machu Picchu. Space is limited to 15.

Integral Practitioner in Praxis

Who: Tlholego Ecovillage and integralMENTORS – together with Integral Without Borders
Where:Tlholego Ecovillage in the Northwest Province – South Africa
When: 07-11 May 2012

This week-long gathering is split into 3 parts that can be participated in separately or as a whole, held at the Tlholego Ecovillage in the Northwest Province South Africa, about 2 hours drive from Johannesburg. The main gathering is 3 days of intensive involvement of actual development issues faced by practitioners/communities in the Tlholego area. As a prequel to this gathering a 1 day theory workshop is offered for those wanting to increase their theoretical understanding before tackling the main work of the conference. As a follow-up a 1 day networking/project presentation/study visit is offered.

Outcomes of this symposium

• Publication of a book. Gower Publishing (UK) will be publishing a ’Handbook of Practical Wisdom: Leadership, Organization and Integral Business Practice’ edited by Wendelin Kupers and David Pauleen (co-conveners of this symposium). Selected papers from this symposium will be included in this book.  (For the call for chapters, please contact us directly).
• Selected papers will also be considered for publication at ‘Prometheus: Critical studies in innovation’.
• Symposium proceedings will be documented on Web-Page and published (with ISBN)
• Creation of a multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary virtual  and practical research network that enables workshop participants to remain in contact, engage in further discussion, and develop future research collaborations;
• Development of interdisciplinary and multi-lateral collaborative research projects involving the various research labs and institutes from the different countries represented at the symposium.
• Continuation of a follow-up symposium in 2012
