The first conference to explore the benefits of integrating mind, brain and body to alleviate psychological distress. This free event will provide an introduction to empirical studies that have examined the benefits of mind-body approaches. By “mind-body” we mean those approaches which draw on eastern traditions (such as meditation/mindfulness) and/or those that use the body as a means to help regulate the brain (for example yoga, floatation).
Speakers will provide an overview of the current data and speculate about how these techniques might be used to help individuals who are overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. Several of the talks will include interactive components to allow participants to experience some commonly used techniques.
Following the presentation, an interactive discussion session will explore some of the issues raised in relation to this type of work. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the Sun and Doves pub for a networking event.

The unique and pressing challenges facing both the economic and social situations of the 21st century are calling for fundamentally new initiatives. The burgeoning arena of social entrepreneurship is one such example of how public and private organizations are forging alliances aimed at addressing these challenges. As of yet, though, there is no recognizably useful theoretical underpinning of the systemic dimension of social entrepreneurship. Recent advances in the sciences of complex systems, however, hold great promise for a more thorough understanding and grounding of social entrepreneurship activities. The need for a complexity-based perspective going beyond current linear and equilibrium-based models is even noted in the most recent guidelines for applications for funding in the area of social entrepreneurship programs.
At this conference we will bring together leading thinkers in complexity theory, social entrepreneurship, systems thinking, social innovation, and leadership research to explore questions surrounding social entrepreneurship. Attendees of the conference will gain a better understanding of the state of knowledge in these vital areas and will leave more energized and engaged in furthering the goals of social entrepreneurship. The goal of this conference is not only to provide a unique opportunity to further understanding but also to make a real difference in our world.
Complexity is the study of the dynamics of the diverse linkages and interactions among people, technology, and systems over time. This dynamic approach conceptualizes organizational systems as sets of agents (individuals, processes and mechanisms) that generate novel emergent outcomes out of their interactions.
Social entrepreneurship is increasingly seen as an important component of any national or global development strategy. Can complexity science in general, and the growing scholarship within the complex systems community that is exploring organizational, social, and leadership dynamics in particular, shed additional light on social entrepreneurship?
Systems thinking explores the systemic dimension of organizations, communities, states, and transnational entities looking for universal principles of dynamics, functioning, and enactments. Social Innovation refers to all the various methods of bringing about innovation in social systems in the direction of great sustainability, social responsibility, and the building of communities.

The International Leadership Association invites you to submit your work for Global Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future, a volume in the Building Leadership Bridges series. BLB captures the best contemporary thinking about leadership today from a diverse range of scholars, practitioners, and educators working in the field of leadership studies. In keeping with the mission of the ILA, BLB connects ways of studying, imagining, and experiencing leadership across cultures, over time, and around the world.
The 2008 theme is Global Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future. Is there indeed an ideal of “global leadership” that links local leadership efforts? What are the key cultural, historical, moral, and organizational contexts in which leadership—and related concepts like followership—occur? What lessons can the past provide for today’s leadership challenges? When we speak of “visions for the future,” whose visions do we mean? What role do leaders play in shaping visions, or translating them into action and outcome? Looking farther ahead, can we say anything about the future of leadership in an increasingly complex world?
Global Leadership: Portraits of the Past, Visions for the Future welcomes previously unpublished submissions that explore these aspects of leadership from diverse perspectives, disciplines, cultures and sectors. Submissions are encouraged that strengthen ties between those who practice and those who study leadership, and that foster effective and ethical leadership. We welcome scholars’ explorations of the changing field of leadership and we also welcome practitioners’ reflections, stories, and “reports from the field” that help us understand leadership at the intersections of theory and practice.
Submitted articles should be no longer than 5000 words. Identifying information (names, affiliations, and contact information of all authors) should be on a separate cover sheet. In August 2008, John F. Kennedy University and Integral Institute will host a historic event: the inaugural, biennial Integral Theory Conference (ITC), the first major academic conference devoted to the field of Integral Theory!
The theme of the conference is Integral Theory in Action: Serving Self, Other, and Kosmos. The conference will showcase how scholars and professionals are using Integral Theory to impact the lives of individuals and communities. Attendees will have an unprecedented opportunity to network with other Integral scholar-practitioners and pioneering Integral thinkers. Throughout the conference there will be a focus on community, discourse, and dialogue. A major focus of the conference will also be application; participants will leave with a deepened capacity to apply Integral principles in their own lives and professional work.
