Leading Comments: Leader, Leader, Who is the Leader?

Leading Comments / March 2008

Russ VolckmannAs people around the world who are interested in the practice, development and theories of leadership, we face a dilemma. Well, maybe more than one. For example, how does it feel to be a part of a field of understanding with no agreement about what the field is about? Is it about management? Is it about something that is different from management? Is it about service? Is it about charisma? Is it about transformative change? Is it about leaders and

According to the Hungarian philosopher of science Ervin Laszlo we are on a point in history of either breakthrough or breakdown. When we look at international developments, it almost seems that we are heading towards a breakdown. International tensions, global warming, beyond peak oil and a mortgage crisis feed anxiety and the pessimist mind. But as Dr. Don Beck says: “There are no prizes for predicting the rain, it is time to build the arks.” With this in mind he …

As a member of the International Leadership Association, one of the benefits is free online access to Leadership Excellence, a publication that seems to be endorsed by Warren Bennis. Recently, I downloaded the current issue and shared it with the Integral Leadership Review’s Management Review Board. I appended the question, “Competition?” One of the responses I got included the following from Keith Bellamy (Integral for the Masses):

While I am not going to use this space to recap all of this, I am going to come down on the side of those seeking

Have you ever read Richard Feynman’s essay “The Value of Science?” It is published in a little book of short pieces by him: The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, edited by Jeffrey Edwards (New York: Basic Books: 1999). There is much about the spirit of this man that I admire and much of it is about his valuing of not knowing. Sounds strange to say that, but when he reflects on the relationship between science and the human condition,

Volckmann imageAre you really paying serious attention to what this is all about? Maybe not, because I have not always been clear about that in my own mind and behavior, much less in my words to you.

First, let me say that it is extremely gratifying that we have over 1675 subscribers in more than thirty countries. The support shown for this project is encouraging. In addition to subscribers we have the support of a growing number of leaders in …

We are in the fifth year of publication of the Integral Leadership Review. It is increasingly taking the form that I hoped, although I am sure there is still much that can be done to make this a useful document that attracts a wider audience in the fields of consulting, training and coaching, as well as among business and other organizational leaders who have a passion for leadership.

I am grateful to the 1200 (Thanks, Warren—#1200) subscribers to Integral Leadership …
