The Austin Human Emergence Weekend

Barbara N. Brown

One recurring discussion at the New Year’s What Next Integral conference in Colorado was the emergence of spontaneous integral-like thinking.  Many feel the need to begin to draw these voices in from the wilderness by bringing integral ideas into the mainstream.

On March 9-10, Don Beck, Spiral Dynamics, and Phyllis Blees, President of Peace Through Commerce, hosted a Human Emergence Weekend in Austin, TX.  Based on the historical …

Building a Village Community

Notes from the Field / March 2013

Ian McDonald

Nearly a year ago, one of the online Integral forums put out a request for case studies covering organisations where Spiral Dynamics Integral or the Integral lens had made a measurable difference to a project outcome. No sector or geographical boundaries.  It became very clear to me, in reading the subsequent threads, that two of the most powerful sets of lenses have remained as intellectual toys – admired by thousands, played with by many …

The Master Code and Integral Politics in Polarized America

Column / March 2013

Don E. Beck

Regardless of your own political views, memetic codes, or location on the intensity spectrum (from flame thrower to pragmatic) you must be both concerned and confused as to the current issues in Washington DC. While the words “stalemate, “crazy,” “polarized and soaked with acrimony,” define the condition, it appears the huge gaps in our society continue to grow and expand. The fiercely fought presidential campaign has not abated one bit. President Obama’s campaign …

Madrid: A New Opportunity to Improve a Social Reality

Notes from the Field / January 2013

Roberto Bonilla Núñez and Catia Bernaldo de Quirós

Last October 2012, Dr. Don Beck was invited by a chapter of the Spanish Integral  Association to deliver a Spiral Dynamics Integral workshop (certification level 1). This invitation  was issued thanks to the diligent efforts of Catia Bernaldo de Quirós who several months before started exchanging emails with Dr. Beck and at the same time looking for funds to make this event a reality

It was at the …

Global Options and Linkages[1]: Towards an Evolutionary Complex Systems Approach to International Development

Special Articles / January 2013

Alexandre (Rico) de Faria

Development takes place as people learn how to change/improve their daily actions/behaviour. Innovation takes place when the new behaviour results from a change in values and beliefs – that is, when change on the ground is not simply a superficial external behaviour but a reflection of an internal change in people’s way of thinking, mind-sets. This leads to sustained change through time and implies a continuous process of change as people’s value …

Lincoln and Polarization

Don E. Beck

No more shall the war-cry sever;
Or the winding river turn red;
We shall bury our anger;
As we cover the graves of our dead.
Love and tears for the Blue;
Tears and love for the Gray.
Unknown

It will always be difficult for me to separate the man from the myth, the gladiator from the visionary, and the playful jokester from the serious liberator. As is often the …

Spiral Dynamics in Action: the Momentous Leap: The Confab 13, 9/6-9

Notes from the Field / October 2012

Russ Volckmann

It had been ten years since I attended SDi 1 and SDi 2 certifications in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Marilyn Hamilton was working with Don Beck to facilitate the sessions. If memory serves, there were about 50 people in attendance, almost all unknown to me. But these sessions were all Don. He served up his stories, accompanied by music that helped us connect to the vmemetic aspects of ourselves.

Perhaps the most valuable takeaways …

Consciousness Models in Action: Comparisons

Feature Articles / June 2012

 Maretha Prinsloo

Abstract

This paper discusses various theoretical models of the evolution of consciousness as well as critically evaluates and integrates the models into a single organising framework, which is then applied to leadership theory.

The construct of consciousness as described by the Spiral Dynamics (SD) model of Clare Graves is linked to the work of other developmental and consciousness theorists, namely Wilber, Gebser, Piaget, May, Kohlberg, Perry, Loevinger, Maslow and Kegan. The spiritual perspectives of …
